Organizing Your Family Tree Photographs

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Mary Kaye McCauley-Stiff Most family tree software now enables you to link your data to digital photographs. Its much more rewarding to view the family tree data when there are faces linked to the names (even if those people tended not to smile for picture-taking). But keeping track of all those family tree photographs requires a different organization method than what you use for your present-day photographs. Once you scan a photo, save it into two folders: JPEG PHOTOS BY SURNAME JPEG PHOTOS OF FAMILY JPEG PHOTOS OF SURNAME This folder contains sub-folders that are labeled by surname. For example:CornwellDunnMcNallyModesto This makes it easy to find all the family members with a particular surname. JPEG PHOTOS BY FAMILY No sub-folders for this one. All of the photographs are loose, which makes it easier to view them as thumbnails and to link to them from your family tree software program. All of the photographs are listed with the following naming method: If the picture is of an individual, label it: [Last Name, First Name, Born Year, Theme/Event] For example: [Dunn John E born 1875 Obituary] Note: Having the birth year or some other notation helps when you have 5 people named John Dunn in the family. If the photo is of a cemetery marker, the name of the cemetery is listed first. For example: [St Patrick Cath Cem Maple Grove Dunn John b 1875 oss Modesto Elizabeth b 1886] Note: The abbreviation oss means “on the same stone.” This makes it easy to pull up which of the relatives are all buried in a particular cemetery. You would also create a copy of the photograph and name it for the wife under her maiden name: For example: [St Patrick Cath Cem Maple Grove Modesto Elizabeth b 1886 oss Dunn John b 1875] If you are a very thorough person, you can also use the properties feature of the file (right-click on the file in Explorer and select the Properties command) to summarize who is in the picture. Note: For sequences of photos, label the last part of each photo with ‘1 of 5′, ‘2 of 5′, etc. to keep them together. If youre uncertain how to label a photograph that doesnt include people (such as a farmhouse), use the name of the person you have a blood relationship with. For example: [Modesto Elizabeth C Dunn John farm aerial view 1 of 5][Modesto Elizabeth C Dunn John farm aerial view 2 of 5] Tip 1: If youre on a quest to have headstone photos of your ancestors, copy the filenames into a word-processing document. Bring it with you on field trips. That way you can quickly check to see if you have a cemetery marker photo or not. Tip 2: To label photographs of women whose maiden name is unknown, use the following naming method: [Cornwell, Margaret Mrs. Michael b1799 d1870] This helps you see right away which women are missing a maiden name. Also, if the name is a common one, identifying the husbands first name helps keep them all straight. No doubt youll want to tweak this method to find something that works for you and your family names. But whatever you do, dont forget to back up your photographs! Personal Space: Life After Lap-Band Surgery

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Robin McCoy Have I become invisible or are people just aiming right at me? It seems to me that in a crowd these days, whether at the grocery store or 5th Avenue in New York City, people will walk right into me if I dont step out of the way. Or they stand so close to me I have to step backward in order to breathe. Now, I have never felt that I have such a small area of personal space. A busy street or mall never bothered me. I could walk through the crowd at a museum or a concert without being trampled. Only since losing 110 pounds have I begun to notice how the shrinking personal space has begun to bother me. When I weighed 277 pounds I always felt emotionally invisible; that no one truly saw me or knew I was there. But while I felt emotionally invisible, I knew I was always physically there. I didnt get bumped into, people didnt stand so close to me that I felt the need to step away in order to maintain personal space. In the mall or on a San Francisco street, people gave me a wide berth. Bus passengers would hesitate before sitting down next to me judging just how much space they would have for their ride home. When a thin person sees a fat person, regardless if the fat person is attractive or not, a bit of uneasiness runs through the thin person; If I wasnt working out everyday that could be me. Thank goodness I dont look like that. Ok, salad again for lunch. According to ABC News, the American public spends $33 billion on the ever elusive quest for non-fatness. The billions are spent on fat-free products, exercise equipment, gym memberships, and weight loss programs. Spent on anything and everything not to become that fat person they see on the bus.So it is no surprise that when the one thing they work so hard to avoid is right in front of them they steer clear of it. As a newly thin person I see the overweight person. I wish I could stop them and tell them how I did it– that I was once overweight and have broken free. But I cant. So instead I make eye contact. I smile. I sit next to them on the bus without hesitation. But it is a different life I am in now. Today I feel like I am physically invisible when walking those crowded streets, and that people are going to literally walk right into me if I dont step out of the way. I feel like they no longer see me; or maybe they are just no longer ill at ease. Maybe I am now like everyone else and I need to get the hell out of the way if I dont want to get run over. Why This Research Was Covered Up and Buried, How Focal Infection Theory Disbelievers Brought On

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By George Meinig The fight against the focal infection theory was mainlycarried out by Doctors Percy Howe and John buckley. Howe based his opposition on a study he conducted injecting rabbits with normal placid streptococcus bacteria secured from the mouth, not bacteria froman infection site or a root filled tooth. In his investigation, none of the animals became sickor died. Buckley was unable to see how infected teethwhich showed excellent evidence of bone repair afterroot canal therapy could possibly still be infectec. Then too, because some who had root filled teethremoved did not recover, he questioned the validityof the conclusion that a percentage of patients didget well due to the removal of a tooth or teeth. The arguments of these two men were weak and theyfailed to consider or believe: That poor nutrition and inherited genetic problemsare also causes of degenerative diseases. That oral bacteria do not act in the same manneras do the germs that cause measles, smallpox, mumps, scarlet fever, etc. That when teeth become infected, oral bacteria findthe dentin tubules an ideal cave-like hiding place, and these germs and their toxins- like the virusesthat cause cancer - metastasize and escape to infecthearts, joints, kidneys, lungs, the stomach, eyes, andcountless other tissues. That what makes these bacteria so dangerious is theirability to become polymorphic; that is, to mutate, adapt, change, become smaller, anaerobic, more virulent, and more toxic. That pregnant women or others experiencing a higherthan normal degree of stress become particularlysusceptible to diseases arising from oral infectionsources. By the mid-thirties, most physicians and dentists believed the focal infection theory to be correctand valid. With the advent of penicillin, there arose the belief that antibiotics could cure all these problems, and little is heard today about focal infections. New York State-Themed Gift Basket Ideas

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Wendy Wood There is probably nothing the state of New York and the popular tourist attraction of New York City has not seen. In the United States, New York is the third most populous state. Situated in the Mid-Atlantic part of the nation, the state offers access to the likes of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania across its borders, as well as shares an international boundary with Canada. Plenty of locations about the state offer a wide-range of attractions and activities to explore, including visits to the five largest cities: New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers, Rochester, and Syracuse. New York has long served as a symbol for peace and equality through its history of immigration and acceptance of an infinite range of cultures and ethnicities. When thinking of themes that will connect a state-specific gift basket to New York, an assortment of subjects may arise. For starters, the state features a significant amount of natural wonder with their state parks and two major forest preserves, such as the Adirondack State Park (which is actually the size of Vermont). This particular feat makes the Adirondacks the largest of its kind in the U.S. A host of products bear the Adirondack name, which could enter a gift basket, including bottled water, jewelry, snacks, cheese, honey, maple syrup, fruit spreads, cookies, books, and toys. A wealth of camping trips has taken place at the Catskill State Park over the years, which is home to about 400 black bears in the region. Those looking for a nice place to stretch their legs and picnic also use the trails in the park. Why not supply a gift basket picnic spread that takes the hustle and bustle out of trying to gather up a decent meal-on-the-go at the last minute? This may especially benefit tourists who are unfamiliar with the best locations about town to collect provisions. The economy of New York provides many gift basket themes to draw from. Apples, cherries, pears, peaches, and maple syrup are some of the major agricultural products the state is known for. This gives way to many different fruit-related gift baskets your business may create with bright, bold color schemes. Last but not least, New York City is an explosion of sight and sound that awakens your senses even before you step foot in the area. With some of the most visited tourist sites in the world, the Big Apple certainly provides plenty of potential gift basket arrangement themes to explore. Notable destinations include Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Broadway, Times Square, and the Statue of Liberty. A gift basket highlighting New York Yankee- or New York Mets memorabilia is also a great idea to offer die-hard fans. The Benefits of, Well, Benefits

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Suzanne Wood Lets face iteven though most of us arent prowling used car lots wearing plaid polyester leisure suits, were all in the sales business. Whether youre trying to persuade lawmakers to pass legislation favorable to your company, hoping to soften the blow of an unpopular personnel policy or launching a new teen-driver safety initiative, youre selling. And as all advertising prosespecially those in direct-response marketingwill tell us, youve got to tailor your sales messages to emphasize benefits over features. People will buyor buy intoyour product or your message when theyre emotionally convinced that it will improve their lives or protect their assets, family, or health. Its OK to mention featuresa bills particulars, a products warranty, a campaigns dollar goalbut they must be tied to benefits or your prospect wont be moved to take action. Sounds simple, right? The new Ecologica XYZ wagon will allow you to buy 3 times more Birkenstocks and enjoy two soy lattes every day with your $2,500 in annual gas savings is a benefits-oriented statement. The new Ecologica XYZ gets 79/mpg highway and 69/mpg city is a features-oriented statement because it doesnt tell you how that gas-mileage information will improve your life. But youd be surprised by how many seasoned communication/advertising pros focus exclusively on features. Case in point: A friend was recently working on marketing collateral for a medium-sized business. The key contact at the business was excited about the companys new state-of-the art phone and computer system, and wanted to devote a whole page to glowing descriptions of them. My friend asked the client how the new infrastructure actually benefited their clients or prospects. Well, its important to us and were really proud of it, so we want it in there, the client countered. Happily, my friend was able to convince the company to include a benefit with each feature they mentionedi.e., how the new super-powerful system would mean that customers would be served even faster than before, etc. Anything else would just be vanity. So vet each piece of copy you turn out to see if it passes the benefits-vs.-features test. A good rule of thumb: If a sentence begins with we or our, its probably emphasizing a feature; you statements tend to be more benefit-oriented. If you dont, your audience will go, Whats in it for me instead of Take my money, please! or How do I sign up? Using Article Marketing To Make Money

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Chris Rohrer One of the first ways I started to market online and earn an extra income was from what is called article marketing. I had little money to invest into advertising and someone told me about article marketing, and how powerful it was, and they recommend that I started writing articles to promote my business. So what Im going to teach you here today is how you can use articles just like this one you are reading to make money with your home business. Most people think writing an article is a very hard. Actually it is a very easy process if you follow these simple steps. First write about stuff you already know. Or if you want to write about something you have little or no knowledge about then you must simply go out and research it a little bit, and read what other people wrote about it. After that you should have a fairly good understanding of what it is you where trying to learn, and you should be able to write up a very simple article on it. Important things not to do in your articles are that you dont really want to sell people anything in your articles. You want to give them information that can help them. People love information that is going to help them accomplish what they want to do. A well-written article that is very helpful will get picked up by a lot of directories, which will then in return spread your article around for even more people to see and read. So now you might be wondering well how do you use articles to make money if you cant sell people in your article? The answer to that question is simple. For every article you write there will always be a resource box or an about author box where you can enter in information about your self, or your business that you might run. That is where you will then want to place a small little sales pitch. If your article was good, and people liked it more then likely then will click your link, because they want to see what else you have come up with. To make even more money from writing articles you can invest a little money for an article submission program. These places will submit your article for you to hundreds of article directories for you, which will help, increase how many people view your article. Some places I know of off the top of my head are submityourarticle.com, and articlemarketer.com these are two of the best places that I know of. Orchids Versus the Traditional Rose

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Anne Clarke Orchids spark more emotion in more people than perhaps any other flower. Yes, many of us might hold roses as the most emotion-inducing flowers. After all, roses are the flower most associated with romance in our culture. But in truth, most would consider an orchid to be a much more romantic gift. Who would not choose an exotic and wild orchid (and often rather expensive orchid) over a typical backyard rose? There is much more of a culture behind orchids. There are so many people that are extremely passionate about orchids whether these people collect and grow phalaenopsis orchids, cymbidium orchids, and dendrobium orchids in their homes, whether they travel around the world taking photos of wild orchids, or whether they spend years of their lives trying to find the perfect hybrid to make a truly black orchid some people are just crazy about orchids and pursuing them is their life goal! Of course, you do not have to be absolutely crazy about orchid plants just to love them. Perhaps you have just one orchid flower that you love and care for dearly. Or, perhaps you love and care for that orchid flower a little too dearly, and you end up over-fertilizing it or over-watering it. And, of course, such actions will surely lead to the demise of your beloved orchid plant! Orchid care can be rather tricky, and sometimes, it seems, only seasoned orchid growers can master proper orchid care. In truth, though, there are quite a few species of orchids that practically anyone could grow it is just a matter of providing the right growing conditions and the right orchid care. Even if you are not growing an orchid plant of your own, you can surely appreciate the beauty of any orchids that you might see in photographs or in another persons home. There is just something hypnotic and tantalizing about orchids. Again, there are likely some of us who prefer roses to orchids, but perhaps this is simply because roses are more common roses are everywhere and people have not yet had enough exposure to the beauty of orchid flowers. Indeed, although there is much more of an orchid-culture than a rose-culture, it seems that references to roses appear in our overall culture much more often. Just take a look at poetry! Take a look at tattoos, even! Nonetheless, the love of orchids is a love that will burn brightly in a culture for as long as orchids still exist. There are so many different orchids out there in the world, it is practically impossible to not fall in love with at least one species, or type. After all, there are dendrobium orchids, Thai orchids, white orchids, blue orchids, phalaenopsis orchids, cymbidium orchids, and so many more! The Benefits Of Organic Milk, Or Is It Just Plain Hype?

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Davinos Greeno The government, producers, suppliers and retailers then began the shift towards going organic and the result of this activity was a surge in the number of farmers converting to organic production. The supply of organic milk increased rapidly in response to market demand and financial support to convert to organic farming methods that do not use artificial pesticides (insecticides, fungicides or herbicides) on pastures where cows graze. Organic cows are not fed GM cattle feed. This means that there is no possibility of GM or solvent residues being found in organic milk. It has been estimated that in the UK and the USA, our bodies contain traces of at minimum 300 potentially harmful chemicals absorbed from our food. Eating organically grown food and drinking organic milk is an easy way for people to avoid these chemicals. The popular press is going cow-wild over research that supposedly proves organic milk is healthier than conventional milk. Lets look into this a bit deeper. Organic milk has all the nutritional goodness of non-organic milk but due to the cows more natural diet, it also has some additional health benefits such as higher levels of vitamin A, E and antioxidants. The main issue that the organic milk industry is advertising is the high content of omega-3 fatty acids, found abundantly in oily fish (such as salmon, herring and cod) and walnut and fish oil. Omega-3s have been thought to protect against cancer and heart disease. This high content is great news as most people in the UK are deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids, which are also essential for maintaining supple and flexible joints, healthy growth and strong bones and teeth. But are these benefits just empty nutritional superiority claims? Many commentators argue that the amount of Omega 3 is that small that people should eat fish at least once a month instead, and that buying organic milk for this purpose is nonsense. The British Food Standards Agency says it will review the matter but has yet to be convinced that organic milk is any more nutritious than non organic milk. The lack of conclusive scientific research on the nutritional benefits of organic milk could lead to negativity in the overall organic market. My thoughts are this.you pay an organic price premium but you could be getting extra Vitamins, Omega 3, non-GM contaminated milk plus supporting your green lifestyle and a traditional way of farming. On that, I for one am prepared to pay extra and will continue to drink organic milk. Comparing Online Dates

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Claire Brent Online dating opens up a whole new world of possibilities for friendship and romantic involvement. People of all ages, shapes, sizes and lifestyles can use the internet and online dating services to find like-minded people based on specific search criteria and filters that allow them to take one step closer to finding the relationship they are looking for. Depending on how specific you set your preferences to, there is a very good probability that you will be matched up with a number of potentially eligible people. Online dating sites will take certain parts of your personality profile and match it with someone else according to the same criteria. For example, if you place a strong emphasis on religious beliefs, an online dating site will find people who have an equally as strong emphasis. From your initial assessment of compatibilities, the possibilities can seem endless and can even feel a little bit daunting. How do you practically choose the best match? It may simply be impossible for you to meet and get to know every single person that an online dating service sends your way, so you should have a method for sifting through all the profiles you receive so that you dont waste your time pursuing someone who turns out to have your same preferences in certain areas, but not in others that you consider to be equally as important. Know What Else Your Looking For You may have signed up with a particular online dating service in order to find people who are like you in certain areas, however, when the service begins to send a plethora of people to your inbox, make sure that you have a way to mentally separate the maybes from the maybe nots. For example, if you are being matched up with people who love animals, you may also be looking for someone who loves kids, or someone who doesnt want any. Keep a list of other specific criteria, other than your initial one, that youd like to find in a person and compare the short list of their pertinent details to what you have written down. When comparing online dates, there may also be other important preferences, such as location, that can help you decide who to pursue and who to set aside. For example, there may be a number of people who match you in many similar ways, but depending on where they live, it may be more practical for you to choose one relationship over the other. That is not to say that someone on the other side of the country will not have any potential for a future relationship, however, when you are trying to narrow down the number of matches you received, location may be a consideration. Remember to keep an open mind however, and set aside a few that may not have the most eligibility, but are intriguing nonetheless. When it comes to online dating, there is often more to a person than meets the eye, sometimes even in a good way. Claire Brent is the author of the free 7 days mini course “Online Dating Mastery”.
